Grant will be used to improve trail Jun 28 2008

By: Susan Lindsey The City of Texarkana, Ark., and Partnership for the Pathway have been awarded a $5,800 grant to make improvements to the Nix Creek Trail. The Arkansas Department of Health Center for Health Advancement awarded a Health & Fitness Trails grant in the name of the City of Texarkana, Ark. It will be used to add features and provide necessary maintenance to the existing trail. The one-time grant will be used to fund crosswalks in the areas where Nix Creek Trail crosses five roads. It will also be used for speed limit and entry signs and park benches for resting areas, said Julie-Ray Harrison, president of Partnership for the Pathway. Landscaping and beautification in the bench areas will be funded by the grant as well. “What was so great about this is that it happened so quick,” Harrison said. The grant was created by the ADH-CHA as a means of updating existing Arkansas health and fitness trails. Statewide, $50,000 in grant money will be spent for trail projects from July 1, 2008, to June 30, 2009. Currently, the Nix Creek Trail extends from Broad Street to Arkansas Boulevard. City officials said applications have been turned in for other grants that will allow for expansion of the trail from Broad to Preston streets.
