PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT:
The Public Works Department is composed of four divisions - Streets/Parks, Code Enforcement, Planning, and Building Maintenance. The department is under the supervision of the Director of the Public Works, who acts as the Chief Building Official/Zoning Administrator.
STREETS/PARKS:
The Street/Parks Division is supervised by the Public Works Superintendent. Duties of this Division are widely varied and include maintenance of streets and drainage facilities, repair of streets and utility street cuts, inspection of new construction, street sweeping, installation and maintenance of traffic signs and signals, repair and maintenance of Departments' equipment and vehicles, maintenance of the City's parks and swimming pool, mosquito control, and cutting of streets and drainage rights-of way. In addition, this Division performs weed abatement and demolishes structures when private owners do not comply with City codes. The City's twelve (12) parks encompass over 350 acres.
CODE ENFORCEMENT:
The Code Enforcement division is responsible for assuring and protection the public's life, health, safety and welfare through enforcement of codes and ordinances of the City. Construction permits are issued in the Public Works Office, basement of City Hall. In addition to enforcing the building, plumbing, mechanical, gas, electrical, and swimming pool codes, inspectors reassigned to enforce ordinances pertaining to substandard structures, weed abatement and nuisances such as trash, litter and abandoned vehicles. These inspectors also enforce provisions of the zoning ordinance.
CITY PLANNING:
The Planning division is responsible for the comprehensive planning process (long-range planning) of the City and in that regard administers the land-regulation ordinances. on a day-to-day basis (short-term planning), the Planning division prepares and processes all rezoning applications, subdivision plat reviews, conditional use permits, flood plain review, etc. that are heard by the planning commission each month. In addition, this Division processes all variance and special exception requests (setbacks, lot area, lot width, height of structures, etc.) that are heard monthly by the Board of Adjustment.
BUILDING MAINTENANCE:
The Building Maintenance division is responsible of maintenance of eleven (11) City buildings. In addition, it is responsible for custodial services in City Hall. The 11 buildings include four (4) fire stations, four (4) neighborhood centers, City Hall, Public Works shop, and the animal shelter.
The Public Works Department is located in the basement of City Hall at East Third and Walnut Streets.
