Protect
your pet against rabies:
Rabies (Hydrophobia), a serious disease of humans
and all warm blooded animals, has been found in wild animals.
There is a distinct possibility that the disease may be
spread by the bite or scratch of wild animals to dogs and cats and
ultimately to humans.
As there is no known cure for rabies, it is most important
that measures be taken to protect yourself, your family, and
others against rabies. This may be accomplished by the following
advice.
- Your dog or cat
must be vaccinated against rabies by a practicing
licensed veterinarian.
- If you are
taking your dog or cat to a summer resort or to any
other rural area where it may be exposed to the
disease by coming in contact with coyotes, foxes,
skunks, or other wild animals, your animal should be
vaccinated at least 30 days before leaving the city.
- Prevent your pet
from running at large with other animals - This will
retard the spread of the disease if an animal in
Texarkana or suburbs has become infected.
- Notify the
Animal Services when a dog bites a person. Do not
destroy the dog.
- Consult a
veterinarian if your pet behaves in an abnormal
fashion.
- Dogs have no
place on school property or playgrounds.
