PERSONNEL

The Police Department currently has four commissioned officer positions and one Docket Coordinator’s position open.  Three officer and the docket coordinator positions were frozen and have not been filled.  We were allowed by the City Manager to hire two officers to replace Officers Cowart and Fullen who were called to active duty for Operation Iraqi Freedom.  The positions will be reduced when the officers return to work.  We expect their deployment to be a minimum of one year.

Budget

Expenditures remain within prorated limits for all police budgets.  Vehicle maintenance costs in 2002 were significantly lower than costs that we experienced in 2000 and 2001 - largely as the result of being able to replace several vehicles from our aging fleet.  The total vehicle maintenance expenditures for FY2002 were $78,643 - a 34.5 percent decrease from FY2001 and a 6.3 percent decrease from FY2000.  Fuel costs are not reflected in these figures.
